A data engineer is a professional in the information technology industry whose primary responsibility is to construct and maintain complex large data systems.

They are software engineers who are responsible for producing big data pipelines to integrate needed data from various sources. They combine, connect and cleanse raw data and structure it for creating insights in analytics platforms. Their job is to make the needed data accessible, accurate and consistent.

When the organizations are considerably bigger, they aim to have more data engineers working on the different parts of the data pipelines. The companies that see themself as data-driven companies have more comprehensive data analytics expectations, and they need more data engineers.
